Manonmaniam Sundaranar University
The University was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu as a teaching-cum-affiliating University on 7th September, 1990 to cater to the long-felt needs of the people of the three southern most districts of Tamil Nadu viz., Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, and Kanyakumari. It is named after the renowned Tamil Poet scholar, Professor P. Sundaram Pillai (1855-1897), the author of the famous verse drama Manonmaniam. It is his poem that has become “Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu” the official invocation song sung in all functions in Tamilnadu. Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University was established in 1993, under Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.
The Distance Education Council has also approved their distance education program. The distance education is provided to hold examinations and to confer degrees, titles, diplomas and other academic distinctions on persons who shall have pursued an approved course of study by correspondence, whether residing within the University area or not and to provide such lectures and instructions for persons not being residents within the University area under conditions prescribed. About eighty thousand students are studying in the various University Departments and the eighty affiliated colleges including two constituent colleges.
MSU is one of the pioneer institutions that offers Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS). The courses and research programs offered by the University have been carefully chosen after considering the contemporary times and needs of the region. The University Departments offer M.Phil. and Ph.d Programs (Full time and Part time) in addition to regular P. G. Programs. The University offers good library service through the University Library.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
The Department of Education has been engaged in research in the areas of Educational Psychology, Educational Technology, Teacher Education, School Education, Sociological Aspects of Education and Special Education. 32 full-time and Part-time research scholars are doing for Ph.D and they are supported by Senior Research Fellowship, Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship and ICSSR Fellowship under the supervision of the faculty members.
