Interview DosDo’s for Interview – Things which you should be doing in an interview:

1. Do your research and know the type of job interview you will encounter. Prepare and practice for that interview type.

2. Do take a practice run to the location where you are having the interview or atleast be sure you know exactly where it is and how long it takes to get there.

3. Dress appropriately for the industry. Your personal grooming and cleanliness should be impeccable.

4. Arrive early, atleast 10 minutes prior to the interview starting time. Late arrival for a job interview is never excusable. If you are running late, do phone the company.

5. Apart from employer, treat other people you encounter with courtesy and respect. Do greet the receptionist or assistant with courtesy and respect. This is the situation, where you make your first impression with the employer, so give your best.

6. If presented with a job application, do fill it out neatly, completely, and accurately.

7. When you are greeted by your interviewer, offer a firm handshake, make eye contact, and have a friendly expression.

8. Even when your interviewer gives you a first and last name, address your interviewer by title (Ms., Mr., Dr.) and last name, until invited to do otherwise.

9. Do wait until you are offered a chair before sitting. And do remember your body language and posture. Sit upright and look alert and interested at all times.

10. Maintain good eye contact during the interview.

11. In the interview you will need to sell yourself to the interviewer. So, don’t rely just on your application or resume to do the selling for you, no matter how qualified you are for the position.

12. Use a forceful voice. A forceful voice projects confidence and avoid using poor language, slang, and pause words (such as “like,” “uh,” and “um”).

13. Respond to questions and back up your statements about yourself with specific examples whenever possible.

14. Do have a high confidence and energy level and do make sure that your good points come across to the interviewer in a factual, sincere manner.

15. Ask for clarification if you don’t understand a question.

16. Do stress your achievements. And don’t offer any negative information about yourself.

17. Be honest and be yourself. You want a good match between yourself and your employer. If you get hired by acting like someone other than yourself, than you and your employer will both be unhappy.

18. Do show off the research you have done on the company and industry when responding to questions.

19. Treat the interview seriously and exhibit a positive attitude. The interviewer is evaluating you as a potential co-worker. Behave like someone you would want to work with.

20. Do remember that the interview is also an important time for you to evaluate the interviewer and the company he/she represents. An interview is a two-way street. Conduct yourself cordially and respectfully, while thinking critically about the way you are treated and the values and priorities of the organization.

21. Do always conduct yourself as if you are determined to get the job you are discussing. Never close the door on an opportunity until you are sure about it.

22. Do expect fair treatment. If you believe you were treated inappropriately or asked questions that were inappropriate or that made you uncomfortable, discuss this with a Career Services advisor or the director.

23. Make sure you understand the employer’s next step in the hiring process. Confirm when and from whom you should expect to hear next. Know what action you are expected to take next.

24. When the interviewer concludes the interview, offer a firm handshake, make eye contact and depart gracefully.

25. Do immediately take down notes after the interview concludes, so you don’t forget crucial details.

26. Do write thank you letters within 24 hours to each person who interviewed you.
